Issue #11 | Russian hackers, VPN for everyone, Indian gov. censors

Five Better Web things I read, watched, explored during the last 7 days.

Welcome back to The Better Web newsletter!

If you missed me last week, I had Covid and sadly couldn't do anything. But now I'm feeling better and I'm back. 👍

This is the round-up of my Better Web week. Five links show you what, in my opinion, has been important for a Better Web and a Better World during the last few days.

I write about tech, tools, and politics for a progressive world. If you are an activist or NGO worker I provide links and information for you regularly.

Feel free to forward the newsletter, share it, or recommend it to friends and colleagues.

I'm also grateful for any feedback. To do so, just hit reply in the email program, or text me via Linkedin or Twitter.

And here we go.

1. Russian hackers are at war

Leaked Pentagon documents suggest that pro-Russia hacktivist group Zarya claimed to have breached a Canadian natural gas pipeline operator's systems in February. Although, security experts believe the claim could be disinformation or less severe than presented.

However, everyone must be warned because Russia's online war is heating up and can hit anyone, including NGOs.

2. Pro tip for activists

How to set up a VPN

For numerous activists and NGO employees, the concept of a VPN remains unfamiliar. Setting up a VPN is fast and significantly enhances both security and privacy. Give it a try!

3. Tune in!

ChatGPT is not intelligent

Emily Bender from the University of Washington discusses why large language models and tools like ChatGPT are not intelligent and the dangers of thinking they are. A really important episode of Tech Won’t Save Us in these days of hype.

4. Indian government censors social media

India's state-run fact-checking unit can label government-related information as fake and demand its removal from social media, raising concerns over press freedom and free speech.

Modri is simply living the dream of most governments in the world. đŸ˜±

Hello, 1984!

5. Political Communications

Biden gets an army of influencers

The days of expensive political online advertisements seem to be over. In any case, the Democrats are building an army of influencers with a view to the next elections in 2024.

Just nice!

Next year in Moscow

This is a great podcast about the other Russians. People who left the country. Men and women, capable of seeing the war in Ukraine as it is: a cruel and senseless slaughter that will haunt Russia and Russians for a very long time. A listenable podcast from The Economist.

Thanks for reading this.

Please give me feedback on Twitter, LinkedIn, or Nostr.

See you next week!
