Issue #12 | WhatsApp, secure emails, short-distance flights

Five Better Web things I read, watched, explored during the last 7 days.

Welcome back to TheBetterWeb newsletter!

This is the round-up of my Better Web week. Five links show you what, in my opinion, has been important for a Better Web and a Better World during the last few days.

I write about tech, tools and politics for a progressive world. If you are an activist or change maker, I provide you with information and references for your daily business.

Feel free to forward the newsletter, share it or recommend it to friends and colleagues.

I'm also grateful for any feedback. To do so, just hit reply in the email program, or text me via Linkedin or Twitter.

And here we go.

1. How safe is WhatsApp?

With 2 billion users, WhatsApp has faced privacy concerns due to policy updates and data sharing with Facebook. The platform offers some security features, but for full anonymity, consider alternative apps like Signal, Threema, or Wire. Users should use WhatsApp's features wisely to maintain privacy.

If you use WhatsApp, please read this and consider your use, especially for activist work.

2. Pro tip for activists

Which Email services are secure?

Many activists and NGOs are still using email without hesitation. Unencrypted emails are like open letters that anyone can read if they want to.

Here you will find the best secure email services.

3. WTF!

Short distance flights

This thread shows the craziest short-distance flight routes in the EU. My favorite: Germany. Essen-Duesseldorf, which is possible in 18 minutes by car. There is also a train every 15 minutes.

Ergo: Climate is going down - and we need to get organized even more!

4. Technosolutionism won’t fix societal issues

Meredith Whittaker, President of the Signal Foundation, criticized the EU's Child Sexual Abuse Regulation for threatening privacy rights. She argued that implementing the proposed measures would weaken or eliminate end-to-end encryption. EDRi is part of the "Stop Scanning Me" movement opposing the regulation to protect online privacy.

You can watch Meredith’s impressive speech here.

5. Campaigning

Downloadable ebooks

If you are a campaigner or organizer you might be interested in one of these ebooks. Or all of them, because there is a lot of knowledge inside.

Just nice!

13 levels of complexity of drumming

Professional drummer and educator Larnell Lewis explains drumming in 13 levels of difficulty. It’s nice to see, and I love it.

Thanks for reading this.

Please give me feedback on Twitter or LinkedIn.

See you next week!
