EU on Encryption, #PolComm & Effective Activist Guide
Welcome back to TheBetterWeb newsletter!
This is the round-up of my Better Web week. Five links show you what, in my opinion, has been important for change makers in the digital sphere during the last few days.
I write about tech, tools, and politics for a progressive world. If you are an activist or trying to make the world a better place, I provide you with information and references for your daily business.
Feel free to forward the newsletter, share it, or recommend it to friends and collaborators.
I'm also grateful for any feedback. To do so, just hit reply in the email program, or text me via Linkedin or Twitter.
Also, you should know that I’m part of Acter, where we build a secure and effective organizing tool. Get updates on LinkedIn and Twitter.
And here we go.
1. What happened this week?
Spain wants to ban encryption
...but don't worry, it's not just Spain. Almost the whole EU is crazy about it.
What happened exactly? A leaked document reveals that the majority of EU countries support scanning encrypted messages, with Spain being the most extreme.
Summary: It’s getting serious in the EU. After a lot of talking about Chat Control, we are almost there. Dystopian.
2. Campaigning
An effective approach to activism
If you are a change maker and/or organizer, you might ask yourself, how to push organizing for your purpose. The Effective Activist Guide answers even more questions, like “Which tactics can I use?” or “How to recruit volunteers?”.
Great to read and keep as a guiding book.
3. Change makers’ communication
The best newsletter platform
This is a link I had a real deep dive on. There are plenty of newsletter platforms, but which one is the right for activists or NGOs, maybe with a small budget? Depending on what exactly you need, this article gives you more insights.
By the way, TheBetterWeb is written via Beehiiv, which I hereby recommend, since it’s very easy to use and for free.
4. Political communication
Exciting link list
When political communication is clear, persuasive, and consistent, it helps build trust, understanding, and support for proposed changes and can be a good sign that those leading the change are heading in the right direction. Organizers can learn about effective framing and targeting of political professionals. Furthermore they can uncover who is on their side or who is against their mission.
Here you get some inspiration and best practices from #PolComm accounts on Twitter.
Introducing the #PolComm Who-to-follow List!

5. Online privacy & security
Better data protection for Apple users
Contrary to its image, Apple leaves you no choice in terms of data protection. You can’t avoid the Apple App Store, and they track every piece of data you can think of.
But, at least, you can protect your data on the Apple platform better than in the default setting. Here is how and why exactly.
Just nice!
Street View can be funny
Wonders of Street View shows funny, dramatic, and sometimes unbelievable pictures captured on Google’s platform.
