Issue #18

Last week's Internet Shutdowns & Anarchist Brand Modelling

Welcome back to TheBetterWeb newsletter!

This is the round-up of my Better Web week. Five links show you what, in my opinion, has been important for change makers in the digital sphere during the last few days.

I write about tech, tools, and politics for a progressive world. If you are an activist or trying to make the world a better place, I provide you with information and references for your daily business.

Feel free to forward the newsletter, share it, or recommend it to friends and collaborators.

I'm also grateful for any feedback. To do so, just hit reply in the email program, or text me via Linkedin or Twitter.

Furthermore, you should know that I’m part of Acter, where we build a secure and effective organizing tool. Get updates on LinkedIn and Twitter.

And here we go.

1. What happened this week?

Internet shutdowns worldwide

Internet shutdowns worldwide were registered again this week. People in Russia, Syria, and Pakistan, for example, were affected.

But today I am linking to a report on shutdowns in Senegal because the country is not in the public eye so much. In addition, this report provides insights into the general situation of the country.

2. Campaigning

Anarchist Brand Modelling

As a marketing person, I often experience rejection when I talk to activists about branding. The term is too closely associated with advertising and commerce. This manifesto links purpose-driven communities and the concept of branding. Worth reading.

3. Climate action

Hero - a subscription platform for our climate

This is the first subscription platform that brings you climate activist content while your payments are used to fund the featured activists and change makers.

A great idea, which only lacks more members. Now it's your turn. 😃

4. Twitter messages

More marketing than encryption

For several weeks, Twitter has been announcing that their messages are now end-to-end encrypted. On closer inspection, however, this turns out to be more of a marketing headline. I'm linking the article so you don't trust the claims and send sensitive information via Twitter DMs.

Better to use Element or Signal, and even WhatsApp is safer.

5. Online privacy & security

Personal security checklist

Online security is an important aspect of our lives today. I can only reiterate that it is especially important for activists, as opponents of your cause, like governments, increasingly intent on attacking you online. Perhaps this list will get you to check your vulnerability.

Just nice!

This week in Portugal

A photography taken by me.

There was a huge party in Lisbon on Saturday as Benfica became the Portuguese football champion again after four years.

An infinite number of people celebrated - loud and peacefully.

Thanks for reading this.
