Issue #20

Established media vs. new platforms & encryption under attack

Welcome back to TheBetterWeb newsletter!

This is the round-up of my Better Web week. Five links show you what, in my opinion, has been important in the digital sphere for change makers during the last few days.

I write about tech, tools, and politics for a progressive world. If you are an activist or trying to make the world a better place, I provide you with information and references for your daily business.

Feel free to forward the newsletter, share it, or recommend it to friends and collaborators.

I'm also grateful for any feedback. To do so, just hit reply in the email program, or text me via Linkedin or Twitter.

Furthermore, you should know that I’m part of Acter, where we build a secure and effective tool for community organizing. Get updates on LinkedIn and Twitter.

And here we go.

1. What happened this week?

Private data of almost every Turk leaked

Personal data of millions of Turkish citizens and residents were leaked this week in a huge cyberattack. The data includes names, first names, addresses, telephone numbers, bank accounts and more. Among the data are those of celebrities such as Turkish President Erdogan.

💡 Think smart: “Who cares about my data?” is no longer an allowed question.

2. People don’t trust the news

The Digital News Report 2023

Worldwide trust in news, especially by conventional media, is declining.

At the same time, social media is increasingly becoming the most important source of news. However, established digital players like Facebook lose influence, too, while video-based platforms like TikTok and YouTube become more relevant, especially in the Global South.

Furthermore, the report shows the potential of digital communication and why it is so easy today to reach people.

💡Think smart: Via the link, you can filter the results for your country and learn how you can address the most people for your purpose.

3. Campaigning

Great NGO campaigns you might not know

Too often I hear from activists or NGO workers: "Marketing is for business and we don't want to manipulate people.".

However, it is important to inform people and get them to contribute or donate. Here are some cinematic examples of how to reach out to people emotionally.

💡Think smart: None of these films was particularly expensive. Rather, you need people who give you professional guidance and support during the creation and implementation of a campaign.

4. Service department

Gmail will delete inactive accounts

If you haven't used an old Gmail account for more than two years, you might lose it soon. Find out more and how you can prevent this here.

5. Online privacy & security

Encryption under attack – Great piece by NYT

Britain, the US and the EU - they all prepare laws to weaken end-2-end encryption.

This great piece gives a quick overview of the situation worldwide and a strong opinion, too.

Let me just highlight this one sentence:

The question is philosophical, not technical. Do we want to start allowing the government to require companies to conduct suspicionless, warrantless searches of our messages with family, friends and co-workers?

Frog Froderick and his new house

This TikTok video shows a human-animal story that is very funny.

At the same time, it shows how short videos work, how they go viral and how to tell a great story in just 2 minutes.
