Digital Campaigning: tips, data & best practices
Welcome back to TheBetterWeb newsletter!
This is the round-up of my Better Web week. Five links about communication, tech, and tools for a progressive world. If you are an activist or trying to make the world a better place, I provide you with information and references for your daily business.
Feel free to forward the newsletter, share it, or recommend it to friends and collaborators. I'm also grateful for any feedback. To do so, just hit reply in the email program, or text me via Linkedin or Twitter.
Furthermore, you should know that Iβm part of Acter, where we build a secure and effective tool for community organizing. Get updates on LinkedIn and Twitter.
And here we go.
1. What happened this week?
I have often written about this. Like the EU, the UK is also planning a law allowing authorities to view encrypted messages. Here Matthew Hudson comments on this. He is the Chief Executive of Element, a secure messenger based on the Matrix protocol. I use the app regularly and am therefore directly affected.
π‘ Make no mistake. It's not just about niche products like Element or Signal. Apps that are used by millions, such as WhatsApp or iMessage, are similar and directly affected. Be aware not only of BigTech, but watch and respond to government action, too.
2. Digital Campaigning
There is no doubt that large parts of campaigning take place online these days. Social media plays a major role in this. Here are six valuable tips for your social media campaigning.
π‘ Social media is super important, but a rented place though. Your channels donβt belong to you and may fail at any time. Twitter nerds like me are experiencing exactly that at the moment. Get yourself an own space online, a blog or a website for example.
3. Digital Campaigning II
Here I want to show you an example of excellent activism. RESET combines green content with digital activism under the hashtag #digitalforgood. For me an exciting project that shows how change makers adopt to our times and achieve their goals online.
4. Digital Campaigning III
Even more than in the Global North, digital activism is relevant in the Global South. It was only through the Internet that women's groups in Nigeria and Ghana, for example, could muster a critical mass to fight for their goals. This study from 2020 shows the results and the importance of digital activism in African countries.
5. Security & Privacy
This interview with the amazing Naomi Brockwell is an 8-minute sprint through the most important tools that add more security and privacy to your digital life.
π‘ First tip: Don't use Telegram. Did I catch you? π
Just nice!
It's summertime in the Global North. If you live here, maybe you're planning to go to some outdoor pool and maybe there's a diving board.
If so, I have the perfect video for you. It observes people who want to jump from the 10-meter tower. Very funny, very human.

This is the perfect video to wish you an awesome summer. I'm taking a little summer break and will use it to further streamline the profile of this little newsletter. If you have any feedback or wishes, just email them to me or send them on Twitter or LinkedIn. Thanks for any suggestions.
TheBetterWeb is coming back at the end of August.
